6 Tips on How to Prevent Food Poisoning at Home
Food poisoning is a serious matter that can affect a certain person after swallowing contaminated food or water which contains bacteria, parasite or even virus. Food poisoning can lead into serious infection and even death. Some people think food poisoning may only be present in several restaurants, but according to experts, this illness can also affect the unprepared ones even at home. We have listed down the top 6 tips on how to prevent food poisoning at home.
Make sure to wash your hands using antibacterial soap and warm water before eating to prevent any bacteria from getting into your food especially the raw ones. Always keep the counter tops and utensils clean in the kitchen where you prepare your meals.
Proper Food Handling
Handling raw foods properly can help you avoid food poisoning. Always wear clean gloves while preparing the food. But if you’re not feeling well, let the other family member handle the food preparation, for you may spread virus which can contaminate the meals.
Proper Storage of Raw Food & Ready to Eat Meal
Aside from washing fruits and vegetables before storing, it is also important to separate raw food especially meat from ready to eat meals so there would be no cross-contamination which is known as the transfer of harmful organisms from one surface to another. Cold foods should be refrigerated at 41°F while the hot ones should be stored at 140° or above.
Check Food Duration
Keep in mind to always check the expiration date of your food. The longer a meal is past its expiration date, the better it is to just throw it out. Even if the food still look or smell good, don’t eat it. Try not to ignore the “use by” dates, for the meal may no longer be safe to eat after the given time.
Cook Food Thoroughly
Uncooked meals can be risky since harmful organisms on it may haven’t destroyed yet. Make sure to thoroughly cook your food especially meat, seafood and vegetables before serving.
Food poisoning can be prevented if you have enough knowledge in handling, preparing and storing food properly. When you are in doubt, throw it out! Do not compromised your health over a meal that is already expired.
